Discipleship Resources

Each week we provide discussion questions and resources to to accompany the previous Sunday sermon. These resources are designed to both theologically and practically challenge us, grow our knowledge of God & His word and further deepen our relationships with Jesus.

We encourage you to take time to discuss & pray over the questions and resources. Our hope and prayer is, that this would be another way we can grow into loving and mature disciples of Jesus, here at Reality Honolulu.

This is Reality | Prayer

Week of 05.12.24

What Is Prayer?

  • Prayer is one of the most common themes in scripture, it also takes many forms for a variety of uses. What is your definition of prayer, and how do you use it most often?

  • Our prayer time is meant to connect us with God. In what ways does prayer connect you with God?

  • How regularly should we pray and what does that look like?

How Do We Pray?

  • J. Oswald Sanders says - “Prayer in the Spirit is prayer whose supreme object is the glory of God, and only in a secondary sense is it a blessing for ourselves or for others” How much faith we have in prayer is a direct reflection on who we are viewing as the object of our faith. Examine how much faith you have in prayer and how that reflects how you see God.

  • God is our father in heaven, but one of his most common names in scripture is “Lord of Armies” How does this dichotomy of Father and Warrior affect how we view God and our prayers to him?

  • John 16:23 says “whatever you ask the father in my name he will give to you.” How do we contrast this with the common experience of not having our prayers answered?

The Usefulness Of Prayer

Matthew 22:37-39 “He said to him, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and most important command. The second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself.”

  • How have you seen prayer affect your love for God in these areas: Heart, Soul, Mind and strength?

  • How have you seen prayer affect your Love for others, does it’s increase or decrease correlate to how much you're praying?

  • Matthew 6:9-13 shows us how we should pray “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” In light of this passage, how can we pray for God's will to be done, without our wills getting in the way?
